About Barbara
Barbara Smyth was elected Mayor of the City of Norwalk on November 5, 2025, after more than a decade of service to the community. A Norwalk resident for almost 30 years, she moved to Norwalk and raised her family here. Before becoming Mayor, she served eight years on the City Council, including two terms as Council President and one as Majority Leader. She also served as an English teacher at Ponus Middle School and Norwalk High School and spent more than 15 years in the radio industry honing her communication skills. Across her career in education, communications, and public service, Barbara has built her work around listening, collaboration, and community service.
As Mayor, Barbara is focused on clear communication and open government while moving Norwalk forward through strong schools, improved infrastructure, responsible development, support for local businesses, sustainable initiatives, and expanded arts and cultural opportunities. She believes Norwalk’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths and is committed to keeping the city welcoming, vibrant, and a place where families can build their futures. Barbara is married to Pete Smyth, and they have three children and two grandchildren.
